LOS ANGELES — Mayor Eric Garcetti today celebrated the opening of the LAX Economy Parking, a $294 million, 1.7-million-square-foot facility that has approximately 4,300 new parking stalls a half mile from the LAX Central Terminal Area (CTA).
“As the third largest airport in the world, LAX is a global crossroads where dreams take flight and we welcome the future of our city with open arms,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “LAX Economy Parking is a historic marker of progress in the midst of a once-in-a-generation transformation at the airport — bringing travelers a state-of-art facility that will help reduce congestion, enable our airport to realize its full potential, and create a more seamless travel experience for millions of Angelenos and visitors.”
The new structure, known as the Intermodal Transportation Facility-West during construction, is the first major component of LAX’s $5.5 billion Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP) to be completed and will be opened to the public on October 19, 2021. Once complete in 2023, the Automated People Mover (APM) will make its final stop at the new parking facility before continuing to the CTA.
The four-story facility features a streamlined parking experience that includes pre-booked parking for discounted rates, ample electric vehicle charging, and automatic entry and exit. Online pre-booking will offer the greatest discount compared to the drive-up rate of $25 per day, with initial discounts up to 70% off pre-book rates with dynamic pricing that will be based on availability and the amount of time booked in advance.
A dedicated shuttle bus will transport parkers between the facility and the LAX Central Terminal Area, where a dedicated inner bus lane on the Arrivals/Lower Level will provide quick access to and from the airport away from regular traffic.
“The opening of LAX Economy Parking is a momentous achievement, the first element in our multi-billion-dollar transformation that will forever change how Angelenos and visitors get to, from and around our airport,” said Beatrice Hsu, President, BOAC. “This innovative facility is an integral addition to our airport parking, and will provide a convenient and affordable place to park, while elevating the guest experience at LAX.”
“Today is a truly historic day for LAX and Los Angeles as we unveil this state-of-the-art facility, which showcases how we are creating the world-class airport our City deserves,” said Justin Erbacci, CEO, LAWA. “Building a better LAX is more than just bringing state-of-the-art facilities online – it's about how we build, and we are proud that this facility rose from the ground with the help of more than 3,700 craft workers and nearly 850,000 work hours over the last several years. It truly is a testament to our partnership with the building trades to use local, skilled labor as we transform our airport.”
LAX Economy Parking features a sustainable design, with energy-saving lighting controls, dedicated parking spaces for zero-emission vehicles, recycled water, and drought-tolerant landscaping. A total of 500 Level 2 and eight DC-fast (Level 3) chargers will be installed and operational in the first year. As a whole, the building incorporates infrastructure for nearly 1,600 parking stalls to have EV charging capabilities.
LAX is in the midst of a $14.5 billion Capital Improvement Program, the largest airport project of its kind in the nation. The overhaul touches all nine passenger terminals and builds new facilities, including the APM train and a Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility. This past summer, Mayor Garcetti celebrated the opening of the Terminal 1 extension at LAX, a $477.5 million, 283,000 square-foot extension of Terminal 1. In May of this year, Mayor Garcetti dedicated the opening of the West Gates of Tom Bradley International Terminal — a $1.73 billion investment that adds 15 gates and 750,000 square feet just west of Tom Bradley. In November 2020, Mayor Garcetti announced that the Delta Sky Way transformation project, a $1.86 billion project to modernize and upgrade Terminals 2 and 3, is 18 months ahead of schedule.
